DRY ROT / TERMITE WOOD REPAIR

Termites and Dry Rot OC with Blue Knight Termite Control and Construction, Termite Damaged wood

We have techniques to drastically reduce the chances of Termite or Dry Rot reoccurrence.

Termite Wood Repair:

We approach Termite Control with Prevention in Mind. We make great efforts to eliminate the conditions that cause Dry Rot and Termite Damage. We have a 39 year background as innovators. We specialize in exterior carpentry such as Patio Covers, Fascia Boards, Siding, Window Trim, etc...

You can distinguish between Termite and Dry Rot damaged wood by the following:

Termite wood has holes and tunnels, and you will notice tiny pellet droppings in and around the damaged wood. Whereas with Dry Rot, the wood is shrunken, warped and soft, you can sometimes easily poke your finger through it.

Dry Wood Termites are attracted to weak or rotted wood caused from reoccurring dampness.

In coastal areas like OC, we have the perfect environment for Termites and Dry Rot to take hold. A good paint job, (no bare wood on wood connections such as miter joints), and proper caulking and flashing techniques will keep wood dry and free of rot and Termites. The Termites will usually go elsewhere if these measures are taken.

There are many trouble spots that are hard to get to with paint and caulking, such as the top of fascia boards where they meet the sheathing or shiplap and roof. These trouble spots are usually behind gutters or have a roof tile overlap, which make it almost impossible to paint. These are very common areas for termites to find an opening. A metal edging covering these areas usually does the trick.

Termite Control and Wood repairs are ongoing and expensive, but it doesn't have to be that way.

Our wood repair techniques are engineered to reduce or stop reoccurring maintenance, not to perpetuate a constant source of income as is the norm in the Painting Business. With Blue Knight techniques, our wood repairs are made to last and keep the wood dry.

Fascia board repair and replacement:

Fascia boards are a part of the eves and attached to the rafter ends. These wood components are also attached to the roof sheeting of which the roof tiles are attached to. Special care must be taken to the metal edging in these areas. Fascia boards can often be high up on the 2nd level of a structure making it dangerous to work on. It's important here to make sure the contractor has his Workers Comp in good standing, and using proper scaffolding and safety equipment.

Starter Board/Shiplap:

The wood sheathing boards covering the eve that the roof is nailed to are especially tricky to repair because the roof tiles need to be removed first.

Patio Covers:

Patio Covers are exposed to the weather and have mostly horizontal wood components; thus they are extremely susceptible to Dry Rot and Termite damage. Patio Covers if constructed with the low standards of the industry, will generally only last about 15 years. We however, craft our Patio covers to last much longer with our exclusive and innovative weatherproofing techniques which are engineered to keep the wood dry rot  and Termite-free.

Window Boxes and Decks:

Window boxes and Decks, like patio covers are exposed to the weather and have mostly horizontal components. The support wood or joists under the deck boards, are hidden from sight and therefore neglected. During our wood repair process, we can fabricate custom metal joist shields or coping that eliminates future maintenance in those areas.

Wood Window Trim/Frames:

Wood windows are beautiful but require maintenance often. Again, the right flashing, primer, paint, caulking materials and techniques can go a long way towards reducing perpetual wood repairs on windows.

Siding:

Very often, siding is improperly flashed at windows and roof sections. Under these conditions, rain water will leak and permeate the wood or composite-siding causing Dry Rot and attracting Termites. We know how to redesign these areas properly.
